about

7am is a co-write with my daughter Hazel. She wrote the chorus. Well, half the chorus. I was at the piano trying to re-write my other chorus (which sucked) and she walked in and laid down on the rug behind me and started singing "I'm lying by myself / like an old friend." That's a great line.
Last winter (2018-19) I was getting up pretty consistently to write from six to seven in the morning. Most times I would sit with a blank page and watch the sun coming up. Turns out it's really hard to generate coherent thoughts when it's sixty three degrees in your house and you're half asleep. On one of many occasions when trying to think of lyrics had generated no lyrics at all, I free associatively journaled instead, about the absurd task of getting out of bed in the Wisconsin winter, and how one just decides, in a compulsive moment, to push the blankets off and kind of throttle the body into the day. This became an analog for my own game of mental health, how I must remember when in the dark and cold that action begets action, you have to click the clicker button to get life's slide projector to pivot into the next scene, everything can turn, and the next thing won't be initiated by thought alone.

lyrics

7am
Awake but gravity prevents me
Will I break its pull
The floor is cold, the air is dry

Our walls are thin
A bloom of frost on every outlet
Outside comes in
We'll never stop it but we try

I'm lying by myself
Like an old friend checking in
Trying to figure out
Just how long it's been

Don't lose yourself
The blues is always temporary
Is it urgent?
The tape is always ticking by

Hello day glow
Horizon gold - it hums a melody
What is the song?
The words are blurred, unmemorized

I'm lying by myself
Like an old friend checking in
Trying to figure out
Just how long it's been
